Wiki Quick Help

How to Do Stuff

  • Their are two editors for the wiki, one is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor and this is the one that you will normally use. For more fancy work, you will want to study the "wiki mark-up language" which is what you see when you use the "raw editor". The "raw edit" button is at the bottom of every page. This section deals with the wiki mark-up language and is not necessary if all you want to do is add text, links and images to your wiki page. And you can do most things using either editor.

  • Some basic wiki mark-up language items:

    • Simple Text - "just type it" - This is mostly all you need to do to add content.
    • Bullets - multiples of 3 spaces plus and asterisk and another space. Like this:
         * this will be a bullet
            * and this will be a sub bullet
    • Bold Face - just surround text with asterisks. Like this:
       *This Will Be Bold*
    • Titles - put 3 hyphens and some plus signs in front. Like this:
---+This will be a big heading
---+++This will be a small heading
    • Links - start out with two open brackets, put the link url, then a closed bracket, then an open bracket, then the text that you want to appear as the link, end with two closed brackets. Like this:
       [[http://www.google.com][Link To Google]]
    • A New Page - Use a bumpy word and it will automatically be a link to the page named with that bumpy word, if its a new bumpy word, the wiki will make a new page. When you save it a question mark will appear next to the new bumpy word which will link to the new page. Once you edit your new page, the question mark will disappear and a normal link will remain. A BumpyWord is a word with at least two capitals separated by at least one small letter. Like this:
      ThisNewBumpyWord will be a link
    • Tagging: when you make a new page or visit a page that you would like to tag, just drop down the tag list, pick the tag, then click on the little plus sign next to the tag selection window. You can add new tags, find out how at [[http://10.66.30.132/twiki/bin/view.pl/MarsUSRandD/AboutTags][About Tags].
    • Tables - just sparate your columns with the | character. Like this:
      |heading one|heading two|
  • Uploading and Attaching
    • For small files, use the "Attach" button to attach files. On the form for uploading, select the file, describe it so it can be found by the search engine. Also on this form you have two check boxes, the first one, if checked, will put a link to your uploaded file at the bottom of your wiki page. After uploading, you will generally want to edit the page and move this link to where you want it on the page.
    • For large files, use the Upload for media >10 MB. Once you finish the upload you will be given a "link" to the file that you can paste into your page.

Videos

  • The easy way is to just upload the video via the link below then paste the link into the wiki. When the user clicks on this link their computer will play the video.

  • Embedded Video Players - they look cool and are more likely to be viewed smile Just follow the directions after using the upload
